Free Spins Explained: Real Value, Wagering and Max-Cashout Caps
Free spins look like the easiest bonus to understand. They are not. Spin value, wagering on winnings and cashout caps decide what they are actually worth.

Free spins are not all equal
"100 free spins" tells you almost nothing on its own. Two offers with the same spin count can differ in value by ten times once you read the terms. The number of spins is the headline. Three other figures decide the worth.
The four things that set a free-spins offer's value
1. Spin value
Each free spin has a fixed stake value, often £0.10 or £0.20. That value, multiplied by the spin count, is the theoretical turnover the casino is giving you - not what you win.
- 100 spins at £0.10 = £10 of spins
- 100 spins at £0.20 = £20 of spins
- 300 spins at £0.10 = £30 of spins
Velobet's welcome package includes 300 spins, Cosmobet's 100. But you cannot compare them until you know the per-spin value of each.
2. Wagering on the winnings
This is where most players get caught. The spins are free, but what you win from them is bonus money - and that bonus money carries wagering.
Win £15 from your free spins with 35x wagering, and you must bet £525 before you can withdraw. The spins cost you nothing; clearing the winnings costs you time and house-edge exposure.
A few rare offers have no wagering on free-spin winnings. Those are genuinely good and worth seeking out. Most do not.
3. Maximum cashout
Many free-spins offers cap how much you can withdraw from the winnings, regardless of how well the spins go. A £100 cap means a lucky £400 win is trimmed to £100. Check this before you celebrate.
4. The game and its RTP
Free spins are almost always locked to one specific slot chosen by the casino. You do not get to pick. The RTP of that game directly affects what your spins are worth - a 96.5% slot returns more over 100 spins than a 94% one. If the locked game has a poor RTP, the spins are worth less than the headline suggests.
A worked example
100 free spins, £0.20 value, 35x wagering on winnings, £100 max cashout, on a 96% RTP slot.
- Theoretical turnover: £20
- Expected return at 96% RTP: roughly £19.20 in winnings before wagering
- Wagering on, say, a £19 win: £19 x 35 = £665 of bets
- Expected cost of clearing that at 4% edge: around £27
So the expected pre-wagering value (£19) is smaller than the expected cost of clearing it (£27). On average, this offer is a slight negative. Variance means some players clear it and bank up to the £100 cap; most do not. That is normal and it is how these offers are built.
Now make it no wagering on winnings, and the same offer becomes straightforwardly worth claiming.
Free spins inside a welcome package
When spins come bundled with a deposit match - as they do in all four packages we cover, from Rolletto's 100 spins to Velobet's 300 - treat them as a small bonus on top of the main offer, not the reason to claim. The deposit match is the substance. The spins are a topping. Judge the package on the match and wagering first; let the spins be a tie-breaker.
Our free spins category breaks down spin value and wagering for each brand, and the Velobet review shows exactly how its 300 spins are structured.
How to get the most from free spins
- Find the per-spin value. It is in the terms. Without it you cannot judge the offer.
- Check wagering on winnings. No-wagering spins are the gold standard. High-wagering spins are mostly entertainment.
- Read the max cashout. It caps your best-case result.
- Look up the locked game's RTP. A poor-RTP slot quietly lowers the offer's value.
- Use spins promptly. They usually expire fast, often within 24-72 hours of crediting.
The verdict
Free spins are a real perk when they carry low or no wagering and a fair cashout cap. When they carry high wagering on winnings, they are closer to free entertainment than free money - still fine, just not a payout strategy. Always read the four numbers: count, value, wagering, cap. We explain how we weigh them in our methodology.
